As a parent, you realize the dangers that lurk in wait for a baby at every corner. You see all the high steps, sharp corners, and dangerous ledges that you never noticed before. And while you don’t want to lock your child in a room, you want to ensure he or she does not go wandering off the moment you are not looking. • Install the gates before you baby leaves the crib; don’t wait till he or she starts walking to do that. Don’t remove them before the manufacturers recommended time either.

• Gates are no use unlocked. Get used to keeping them locked, even when your baby is sleeping or otherwise engaged.

• Pulling your old gates out of the attic is a bad idea.
