Shipping a Personal Package to Brazil

If you wish to ship a package internationally, you must know that the hardest part is the paperwork.  Once you got that settled, the rest will be a piece of cake. Shipping to Brazil should not be difficult as the country is part of the World Trade Organization. You can send a product or a document through DHL, UPS, USPS or FEDEX all having slightly different ways of doing things but in the end all of them must comply with the regulations that apply in this country.If you are shipping a product to a friend and you are not selling it to a customer or partner in Brazil the procedure may be easier. The first thing you have to do is figure out if you are sending a commodity or a document. Brazil has over 25 classifications of documents so this will be harder than you thought. If you are sending a product, check if there are no prohibitions or requirements for the product you are sending and find out the harmonized tariff code. Brazil may consider that certain products are commercial and you might need to submit an invoice. In that case, you will also need to fill an export declaration.  Prepare the package according to the requirements in that country and the paperwork which in most cases, if you use a shipper’s service, will be a certificate of origin and an export and valuation declaration. You will have to pay an import tax and other fees. This tax is directly connected to the value of the product and can be higher than 60% of the value of the product. You may want to declare a smaller value but then the product will only be insured for that small value in case something happens and the package is lost. The procedure may seem complicated and you may think twice about shipping to brazil but the shipper will assist you along this process and will handle all the dirty work, which is dealing with the customs. Make sure everything is ok and if you are sending an invoice check twice if it is filled with an accurate description of the product. Many packages are stopped at the customs due to an incomplete description.
