The Different Methods Used to Create Steel Cast Parts
Steel casting is the name given to a process that involves the casting of a variety of different types of steel into different shapes and molds. Steel casting is generally used when iron casts are deemed not strong enough or does not have enough shock resistance for the part that is being produced.
The sorts of products that are produced through steel casting includes valves, pumps, engine casings, turbine wheels, and a number of different parts found in mining, marine, and automotive equipment.
Steel casting can either be used with carbon steel or alloy steel, each material offering their specific benefits. Both of these metals are considered very important for a number of companies that are found within the construction industry as steel provides a lot more strength that any other kind of metal, can be cast fairly easily and is resistant to corrosion.
The actual process of casting steel into steel cast parts can be done through a variety of methods:
Szekely Method – This method involves the use of metal molds that have been coated with a mixture of chalk and paraffin. This is probably the most complex method to create steel casts but is certainly one of the most popular.
Slavianoff Method – This method is vastly different from the one used in the Szekely method as it actually concentrates on the melting of steel to create casts. This electric alloy steel casting technique melts the steel before it is transferred to an electric casting plate.
Sand Core Process – This process is the least popular as many feel that there are better benefits to be had through using one of the other two more popular methods.
Among the other methods available, there is the Shaw method, Norton Fluid Rolling process, Bessemer’s method, Whiteley’s method, and Peilsticker and Mueller’s process but none of these are quite as popular as those mentioned above.
Each and every type of method will have its own benefits over the other, so it is essential to do your research before decided which method you would like used to create your Steel Cast Parts.
The best idea would be to speak directly to the company that you will be using as your manufacturer to take their advice on board regarding what they feel will be the best method for your particular parts.
