The National Do Not Call Registry is a federal registyr that telemerketing companies need to register with and bleed their contacts against to make sure those on the list do not receive unwanted telemarketing phone calls. In large part, however, telemarketers remove those registered from their calling lists.

Telemarketers to Abide by National Do Not Call Registry
The National Do Not call Registry concerns any telemarketers whose motive is to sell a service or a product through interstate calls. It does not apply to political organizations, charities or survey takers; even though these sorts of groups can be just as, if not more annoying, than calls from people selling a product or service. In addition, if a consumer has an established business relationship with the seller, the seller may call the consumer for up to 18 months after the last purchase. But, if the consumer asks them not to call, or asks them to put them on the company''s own "Do Not Call" list, then the seller has to abide by the request of the consumer.

How Does the National Do Not Call Registry Work?
On January 1, 2005, telemarketers became responsible to search the National Do Not Call Registry and drop the consumers from their lists who registered with the service. They also became required to search the updated lists every 31 days. Finally, if a consumer receives a telemarketing call and has registered with the National Do Not Call Registry, they can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission on line, or call 1-888-382-1222 toll free.
