The Power Of Focus- A Short Story

Have you ever wondered why you only achieved average results at best working towards the goals that you spent the last year or two working at? Let me share a story on the power of focus and how it can improve your results.

The Power of Focus

          Often time’s entrepreneurs have a million ideas running through their heads and we can forget about the power of focus.  We find ourselves jumping from one project to the next with no clear direction.  Days pass, weeks pass, then a year passes and we have not made the progress we had hoped for.  In real estate it may mean working a few short sale leads, working a wholesaling business, and looking at apartment buildings all at the same time.  All during this time, we may not spend enough energy to become an expert in any of these ventures.  A year passes and we’ve done one deal, but nothing to write home about.  I was reminded of the power of focus from my daughter the other day.

          Growing up my daughter was “in” tap dance, jazz dance, with an occasional ballet class thrown in the mix.  She was in spring soccer and fall soccer.  She went to girl scouts.  She even played in the local softball league.  Running from one activity to another, she never took any of it too seriously.  At times she would lament that other girls were better than she was in these activities.  Then she entered 8th grade and participated in track, swimming, and then softball season came.

          She really enjoyed softball and decided to join a competitive softball team in addition to the school team.  At first her skills were not up to par with some of the other girls on her teams.  Many of the girls had played competitive softball since they were ten years old.  She practiced hard and even asked for additional practice on the weekends with dad.  Her skills improved, but she still was average compared to her teammates.
 
          Then she entered 9th grade, always a big change in everyone’s journey.  Her friends were going out for cross country and begged her to join.  Some of her friends were going out for swimming and begged her to join.  She decided to focus on softball.  In the fall she lifted weights three times a week religiously.  She went to fall softball clinics on the weekends to build her skills.  In the winter she increased her workouts to five times a week.  Once a week she worked with a batting coach to improve her skills.  In fact I was waiting for her to finish working with the batting coach last night when it dawned on me- the power of focus.
 
          I watched her and the other girls work with the hitting coach.  My daughter was no longer average.  In fact, her skills were at the top of the class.  Her coach even commented on how well she was doing.  She is now going to two practices a week, will go to six tournaments all prior to the start of the high school season.  In one year’s time she has improved her skills to bring her to the top of her class.
 
          So I must ask, are you choosing a softball focus or are you going from activity to activity and becoming great at nothing?
