Finding reliable and competent SEO consultants isn't the easiest of tasks as there are so many companies and individuals providing such services in almost every town and city. If you're just using the internet to find SEO or marketing consultants then all you have to go on is their word. Some of the most newly established firms providing such services will probably claim to be both time served and fully competent. Even if they have a list of testimonials as long as your arm it's hard to know if they're genuine testimonials or not.

The best advice when searching the internet for marketing and SEO consultants is to have a look at their portfolio. This should show a list of at least some of their clients' websites on which they have provided marketing or SEO services for, and ideally should also detail each companies goals and the results delivered. For example, if a company on the portfolio wanted page one rankings for X, Y and Z keywords, then you should be able to find that companies' website for the keywords stated on the first page of the search engine's results pages, or SERPs.

Most marketing consultants worth their salt should have a portfolio of at least 10 clients. Don't be afraid to contact any of their clients to ask about the services provided. Ask them if they have regular contact with their consultants and if they find they get things done in a timely manner. Some clients feel they're permanently at the back of a queue and this is a position you don't want to be in. Talking directly to a number of a particular marketing consultants' clients will give you a good idea as to how reliable their services actually are. This will also highlight if they're a good all round company, or of their key skills are as SEO consultants rather than a multifaceted  marketing company which would offer PPC management and other marketing skills along side optimisation services.

The facts of the matter is that you won't really know how good an SEO or Marketing consultancy are until you've tried their services for at least a few months. This may sound like a stab in the dark but having communicated with the company which you find most attractive and talking to a handful of their clients should allow you to proceed with confidence into your internet marketing venture.
