Triac dimmer switch is the earliest dimming technology that was developed for AC input incandescent lamps and halogen lamps. It is a reliable and stable solution due to decades of development and now it can also be used for dimming AC LED lights.

Why shall we choose a triac dimmer for our AC LED lights, the reasons are as follows.

 

Firstly, 100-240VAC wide input and output voltage enables it to be compatible with most countries’ input in the world and to be used worldwide. It can be directly connected with dimmable LED lamps or dimmable LED drivers. It comes with full isolated design, which ensures high safety and reliability.

 

Secondly, it is both triac dimmable and mosfet dimmable. While using Mosfet dimming, it outputs PWM signal to control the connected LED lamps and enables smooth switching and dimming without any flickering, which is good for human being’s eyes.

 

Thirdly, forward phase-cut dimming and reverse phase-cut dimming can be switchable, which is a very important feature that allows users to choose the dimming velocity. Phase-cut dimmers, either forward phase-cut or reverse phase-cut, make up the bulk of the dimmer market. After the input voltage rises following the zero crossing, leading edge dimmers inhibit for a period of time, controlling energy transferred to the lamp load and hence output brightness. Trailing-edge dimmers also regulate output by inhibiting for a period of time, however this is referenced to the negative going edge of the half-cycle. Leading-edge dimmers are typically lower cost and so are more widely used whereas trailing–edge dimmers exhibit lower EMI and are preferred in some markets (notably Europe) and noise sensitive environments. That-being-said, it is unlikely that the average consumer will know whether their fixture is controlled by a leading-edge or a trailing-edge dimmer, and so it is important that LED replacement bulbs work with both types.

 

The LED dimmer switch is connected to the lamps, and a control unit is required to send signal to it. Many control signals are available in the market including RF wireless, DMX, DALI and so on. Whichever control signal you choose, the triac dimmer shall be designed with corresponding control interface that receives the signal.
