Vector conversion involves mainly vectorization and image repair. Vectorization is the process of converting raster, bitmap or other types of images to scalable vector graphics or format. This process involves installing specialized software for converting into the hardware devices or converting online by use of the internet. Manual conversion is also done however. Conversion from some types of images such as JPG and PNG usually results into black and white graphics which can be later refined or colored using special programs

Conversion from other types of images including EPS results into colored images very close to the original one. Images converted are scalable and no quality is lost after enlarging. Almost all types of images can be converted as long as they are visible.

  • Raster images/graphics

These images are usually made by use of pixels. A pixel is the smallest element in a device where the image is displayed. This is because it spreads the available pixels over a wider area causing the image to be unclear.  

  • Vector images

They are made of normal mathematical calculations which form lines and different object shapes. These images unlike raster are scaled to any size any quality is still maintained.

Importance of vector conversion

  1. Vector images are scalable

Vector images can be scaled to any size without losing quality. When they are enlarged, their quality remains the same without being blurred. Raster images are the opposite of vector images. They are made of pixels which are distributed over the original image area. Enlarging these images means increasing the area. Since the pixels do not increase with increase in area, the image has to be blurred and unclear. The quality of vector images is therefore preferred.

  1. Resolution independent vector graphics

Vector images are usually used at any resolution. They can even be used at their highest resolution. This is applicable when printing images. The printer can print any type of resolution of vector images that it specifies or the maximum it is made to print. This is opposite to the raster images. In raster images, the resolution varies with number of pixels available.

  1. Vector images are required by many companies

There is high preference for vector images in many companies. These companies include producers of screens and printers, engravers and sign companies. In these companies, vector images are the only images applicable.

  1. Different formats of files can be made from vector images

Vector images are easily converted to many other types of images including PNG, JPG, TIF among many more. This makes them more preferred.

  1. Vector images are more economical

Number of colors used is reduced when printing these images. The color plate number required by printers is also reduced. In the end, the cost of printing is cheaper than in raster images.
