My mother always told me that I should learn to type so that I could always have "something to fall back on". What she meant was that if I wasn't able to find a husband to support me, I would have a way to make a meager living until I did. Although I am the first to tell you that her advice was extremely sexist, it is that same advice that provided me with the tools it takes to become one of the many women in small business who are working online.

That one typing class,Women in Small Business Are Making the Right Choice Articles taken decades ago, has allowed me to spend the majority of my adult life working for myself. This means that I didn't have to put up with jobs that I didn't like, bosses who didn't respect me as a woman, or seeing men get promotions and raises while I was left behind. I have been able to ride the wave of the internet, making more money year after year.

Because of the internet, more and more women are finding that they can start a business on their own and continue to see it grow while still doing other things that they love such as taking care of their children. These women in small business are making a wise choice in that they are building a future for themselves for after their children head to school, and they might even be building something that they can eventually hand off to their children.

I won't lie to you and tell you that being one of the six million American women in small business is an easy feat. It is commonly known that when you work for yourself, you end up working harder than ever, but you will also find that the rewards are much more meaningful.
