Are you selling yourself effectively?
Are you selling yourself effectively? We all know that a huge part of the recruitment process involves firing off CV’s to recruiters and agents, but a harsh reality these days is that your CV may not even get notice. The web has made it much easier to apply for jobs and try your luck so standing out from the crowd is more important then ever. The IT Job Board often receives comments from candidates and clients about what comprises a good CV. So we have spoken to consultants working in the IT recruitment field to provide you with constructive feedback of how to get your professional CV noticed. Some of the advice we offer might be obvious but some people still make these simple slip-up’s. Make sure your CV stands out from the competition Ian R McAllister, specialist in IT recruitment, shared with us his recommendation: Simple - the "key buzz terms" to use are the ones that any recruiter or HR professional put in the advert that you are looking at. He always suggests to anyone looking for their next position, to think what the last one allows them to add to their CV? If you can't answer that, then you are simply job hopping and not managing your career. Nayana Gadkari, Senior Technology recruiter also shared her opinion with us: The key for the candidates to focus on is the key skills, deliverables and methodologies that they used and achieved. General recommendations Ian R McAllister finds most IT people love talking about the skills they have or the projects they have been involved with; but not enough about the role they played, the part they delivered or the business result gained. He realises as an engineer himself this may be irrelevant to the applicant while in the project, but the right business result in the given time scale is what will get you your next position. A recruiter, Head of an International Recruitment Team, sees 100's CV's daily and recommends to have more than 1 CV, tailor CV's to individual jobs. If your career has encompassed 4 different skill sets Recruiters see hundreds of CV’s on a daily basis and scan each of them in a couple of minutes. That’s why these CV’s need to be as tailored to the job you are applying for as possible otherwise you might never be considered for the role.
