Chicago State University was started as a teacher training school in 1867, then became a state college in 1967 and was soon given the status of University in1971. It is a fully certified public, urban institution situated on 161-picturesque acres in a residential community in Chicago , Illinois . It provides bachelors, masters and certificate degrees. It mainly prepares students for success in the twenty-first century and gives importance to education in the stream of humanities.
It is governed by Board of Trustees comprising of seven members, out of which, six are appointed by the Governor itself and the seventh member is a student who is elected by a general body of students. The board's main objective is to serve itself for the public interest and to encourage the University for promoting instruction courses, conducting research and provide various public services.
Wide Variety of Courses
Various schools and colleges in it are Arts and Sciences, Business, Health Science, the Honors College , the Graduate School , the University College etc.
Different specializations in bachelor's degrees are music, computer science, nursing, occupational therapy, mathematics etc. Similarly, the different fields of master degree include criminal justice, library science, English, History etc. In addition to this, the certification courses offered by CSU is Minority Biomedical Research Program which is further divided into two programs namely Research Initiative for Science Enhancement (RISE) and Support of Continuous Research Excellence (SCORE).
This university provides its admitted students diversified financial resources such as campus jobs, loans at very low interests, scholarships etc, thus making college education easily affordable. In order to apply for such aids, the students have to initially submit a FAFSA and so as to be considered for these aid programs. Various aid programs are Federal Pell Grants, Federal SEOG, Federal Stafford Loans, Federal Plus Loans etc.
Its library provides electronic catalogs and on-line education databases. Chicago State University has its radio station namely WCSU which provides programming in different fields such as music, public affairs, fine arts, news etc. Different research centers of the campus include the Center for Urban Mental-health Research, the Research Development Office, Neighborhood Assistance Center etc. A number of student organizations include Chess Club, Models Club, Tempo Student Newspaper etc.
Chicago State University provides a great living and a good learning environment. Since the campus is located in Chicago , a metropolitan area, its students have wonderful opportunities for shopping, sightseeing, entertainment, recreation etc.
Graduate students are given an intern spring at the city colleges.
