Lower Columbia College Excels in Support Services

A community college located in Longview , Washington , in United States , the college serves Cowlitz and Wahkiakum counties and is a two year academy. Extensive support services provided by the college have earned it a distinct place in the university directory of Washington State .

Brief History

Established in 1934, the college was initially named as Lower Columbia Junior College with only 55 students. Classes were held at R.A Long High School . First graduating class with 7 students got degrees in 1936. College received its first accreditation from Northwest Commission in 1948. In 1961 the college was elevated to the status of community college.

Campus

Present campus of the college was established in 1962 and has 25 buildings spanning an area of 38.75 acres. In house enrollment is over 3400 and overall student's strength is nearly 8000 in the college.

Admission

Open admission policy has been adopted by the college and any eligible candidate can apply with a regular application fee of 13 dollars. Transfer students are not ignored either. SAT and ACT reports are important for admission. To make sure that the application is submitted in time it would be prudent on the part of the candidates to check the college website for information.

Student Services

Individual faculty and entry advisors provide advice both in class and online. Many programs including counseling, cooperative education and job search strategies are available in the career center. Childcare is provided for students with small children. Equal opportunity for education is offered for disabled under disability support services. Multicultural services offered include information of financial aids, clubs, scholarship, community services, personal concerns, diversity issues, and tutoring.

Unique Services

Trio student support services for first timers, testing services for students, transfer center for transfer to four year college or universities and veteran's services with eligibility requirement information are some of the unique services offered by the college.

Accreditation

Lower Columbia College is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Besides the Higher Education Coordinating Board's State Approving Agency (HECB/SAA) has also accredited it.

Financial Aids

Lower Columbia College offers more than $300,000 every year in form of scholarships to students through STARS online. Besides gift-aid based grants, work study jobs, student loans, worker retrainingFree Web Content, and work first programs are offered in form of financial assistance for the students.
