Metropolitan State University Allows Students the Option of Designing their Own Degree Plans

A four year public university that is located in the twin cities of Minnesota in United States , Metropolitan State University is a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. It is one of those few universities that allow students to design their own degree plans at least in one college under its administrative jurisdiction.

Campus

Metropolitan State University shares a campus with Minneapolis Community and Technical College . Initially a college for working adults and meant strictly for upper division, admission of freshmen in the campus commenced only in 1994. Enrollment per semester is 9,500 of whom around 4,700 are full time students. In all the campus have four colleges and two schools, the College of Arts and Science, Management, Professional Studies, Nursing, and Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice as well as the First College .

Brief History

Founded in 1971, the university initially followed non-traditional course. Students were entitled to design their own degree plans. On the other hand instructors were entrusted with writing "narrative evaluations" instead of letter grades. Major part of the teaching was done by community faculty as it was considered that their practical knowledge would be valuable. While the university is gradually adopting the traditional format it has retained the " First College " that still allows students to design their study plans.

Programs Offered

University offers Master's degrees in Business Administration, Technical Communication, Psychology, Nursing, Management Information and Computer Science. Doctoral degrees are offered in Nursing practice and business administration.

Unique Feature

Apart from allowing the students the scope to design their own degree plans, the college also boasts of one of the best libraries that came in Saint Paul campus in 2004.

Admission

University has no open admission policy. Secondary school GPA, rank, records, TOEFL scores, and admission test scores are important. Dual credit, life experience, and advance placements are the admission criteria accepted.

Accreditation

Metropolitan State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Commission on College Nursing Education and the Council on Social Work Education.

Metropolitan State University provides career and academic counseling and on campus library facilities.

Financial Aids

Metropolitan State University offers federal, state, local, and institutional grants, scholarships, and student loans. Aids are applied using the FAFSA form.
