Put simply, a grant writer is a specialist writer who concentrates on writing applications for grants for organisations, government bodies and more. The specialisation comes in the form of the research involved, for to apply successfully the grant writer must display a full understanding of many aspects of the process.
First, the grant writer needs to understand the business that the organisation applying for the grant is involved in. This may involve a great deal of research and investigation and the skills of a grant writer extend into this area considerably.
Furthermore, the grant writer needs to have a thorough knowledge of the application process, and this can vary between the organisations that are providing the grants. Being able to analyse what is required and follow the requested guidelines and formats is essential to the skills of the grant writer.
A grant writer needs impressive command of English and grammar, and must be able to put across a concise and correct application that is easily understood by the grantor. He or she must also have a good understanding of budgets and financial matters, and the combined skills of research, writing and monetary matters mean grant writers can command considerable fees.
Grant writers are very often freelance, and work to a fee that they agree with the body applying for the grant. It is up to the grant writer to co-ordinate all aspects of the application from the written aspect to the liaison with the grantor following the application, and again this is an area that requires many skills Ė particularly those of communication and deadline management.
In brief, then, a grant writer should be someone who is patient, has great attention to detail, a good command of English, an understanding of budgetary matters and is a good communicator.
