In truth, the actual job you would be doing would be editing the original draft, for the actual writing of any work submitted by a student needs to come from them in the first instance. Asking you to look over it and edit it, however, is perfectly acceptable, and many students use a third party in such a manner to ensure that their work is of the highest standard.

There are set guidelines to editing an essay that are easy to follow yet make the entire process much more simple and straightforward, so let’s have a look at how you go about it.

First, you need to find your customer: there are many student bulletin boards on the internet that feature requests for people to act as editors on academic texts; use your search engine to best effect and you will find many of these presented to you.

Once you have a customer, and agree on a price (look at others and see what they are charging, and never sell yourself short) you need to set about editing the essay itself.

The obvious things to look for are spelling mistakes – remember to check whether your customer writes in American or Standard English – and obvious grammatical errors; these are the things that are marked down in exam grade essays where presentation is as important as content. Look for the misuse of the apostrophe – a very common mistake – and the capital letter, sometimes dotted in mid sentence mistakenly, and what’s more use your computer spellchecker to help with the process.

Read carefully through the text; you may not be fully conversant with the subject but obvious syntax and sentence structure errors will be clear to you, and you may be able to suggest clearer ways of getting a point across.

Basically, editing essays is a form of proofreading, and the attention to detail is the primary concern; make sure you read each through more than once and check your own corrections, and you may find that you have come across an easy way to supplement your income!
