The HTC Gratia provides an impressive alternative to the mainstream smartphones currently available. Boasting the Android OS, along with some very appealing hardware, this is a handset worthy of a closer look.

It features a compact,The HTC Gratia Provides Great Functionality Articles 3.2 inch screen, and the whole case is smaller than rivals, but this time, smaller does not necessarily mean worse. It goes for pocket-ability which it accomplishes surprisingly well.

The HTC Gratia has four capacitive buttons and an optical trackpad. The keys are the standard Android ones – home, back, menu and search. The optical trackpad is there for increased accuracy. It also can confirm actions as well. There is a status LED on the rim, next to the jack socket. It glows red when charging and blinks green if you’ve missed an event (a call, likely). On the left side there is the volume control – easy to use. The phone is easy to use in general, and the plastic on the back keeps the fingerprints at bay, something that many iPhone users are all too familiar with.

Inside, the phone is propelled by Froyo. Not the latest Android, but a decent, well-tested version, which can be upgraded to later versions. It has the Leapview button to see all seven homescreens in one go. It has Scenes (to have six custom homescreen setups – Work, Travel, Social and so on). Each Scene changes the widgets and the wallpaper according to your liking: Work offers a stocks widget, while Social a Twitter client. Widgets usually have several designs (e.g. clocks have analog or digital displays etc.) and different styles offer different functionality: the tweeting widget has a compact mode for posting tweets, and a full one to show those you follow and lets you tweet as well. An innovative and intelligent and social phonebook is included; it is possible to connect your contacts with their FaceBook or twitter-accounts, it has smart (and voice) dialling.

As for browsing the web, it has an email client that lets you handle several accounts. This might come in handy when you want to separate your business email from your private ones. The web-browser is great; fast, accurate, and quick to load. It also comes with Flash, which is a real treat if you are a regular visitor to websites which have embedded content such as games or videos. It features pinch to zoom, thanks to the screen’s multi touch support, or by double-tapping with text reflow, which just makes it even easier to read on the phone, even for longer texts.

The HTC Gratia has a 5 megapixel camera, giving us great quality shots. As well as still imagery, the included ability to capture video footage offers a great alternative to still images. A number of image enhancing features are included, making the HTC Gratia a competent cameraphone.

All in all, the Gratia is a solid all round performer. With the Wi-Fi hotspot capability, it provides services not necessarily expected from a phone with its compact size, and it provides a great experience to whoever doesn’t want to spend a small fortune on some of the rival smartphone models out there.
