If you are deploying Great Plains Manufacturing suite of modules (Great Plains was renamed into Microsoft Dynamics GP ERP in 2005, so we will be using Dynamics GP name below in the text) we would like to offer you highlights on streamlining and simplifying Manufacturing Order entry and processing

Manufacturing entry could be very determined and you sometimes want to avoid manual data entry,Autoposting and Workflow in Dynamics GP Manufacturing and WMS Articles especially when you are importing Orders from external Manufacturing routine (might be ODBC compliant Oracle, DBII, MS Access, MySQL/PHP/Linux or something else programmed in house) – in these scenarios you often want the MO to be imported, allocated and processed all the way to or even through Posting to General Ledger, where only fractional number of Orders require GP user intervention (maybe to pick replacement parts, override serial or lot number automatic pick).  Similar automation should be available in integrated Warehouse Management System, where you fulfill customer orders on the Warehouse floor by scanning barcode labels of the items, while picking them from the bins (order line allocation or fulfillment in Dynamics GP SOP document) and then scheduling SOP invoice for processing and automatic posting:
1. Workflow and Batch Posting Server.  This technology is based on Microsoft Dexterity (former Great Plains Dexterity) so-called Source Code Programming, where GP programmer analyzes native Great Plains Dex procedures, participating in the batch posting process – calls them accordingly in the custom Dexterity module.  Just to give you some excurse into Dexterity – it is Great Plains Dynamics architecture, created specially to resolve Great Plains Corporate ERP application from Computer Operating System and Graphical platform dependency (Dexterity is the shell, coded in C programming language).  Now the Workflow part.  Posting Server has pre-posting script even, which is available for your software developers to code in Dexterity Sanscript, VBA, VB.Net, C#.Net or simply call DLL library with user interface dialogs, if you catch specific event, where you need GP operator to make a decision.  Here you can choose to use Workflow only (and do not do automatic posting) or to skip Workflow and do batch posting only
2. Manufacturing or Bill Of Materials.  Here you have to do your homework.  If you need to do MRP with Resource Capacity planning, Quality Assurance, and other features of high end discrete manufacturing (if you have to automate process manufacturing, such as food processing, natural resources enrichment – please consider Dynamics GP add-ons or even Dynamics AX Axapta, as it is specially designed to cover Process manufacturing needs) – then probably Manufacturing Suite for Microsoft Dynamics GP is your option.  However, if you only need simple assembly (including ecommerce originated B2C or B2B online placed orders), sort of picking and packing with picking ticket and shipping list printing – Dynamics GP Inventory Control with Bill Of Materials might save you GP Software license cost and reduce implementation budget
