Time tracking tools are basically software programs that allow you to track the time you spent on a particular task. Also, you can see and measure if you have been managing your time efficiently, and if not, allow you to make the necessary adjustments.

If you want to stay on top of your business, the use of time tracking tools is one that will help achieve that. In fact, it can even make you realize that you do not need to spend a lot of time on your desk if you only know how to manage and allocate time for your different tasks.

You always complain that running your business eats away all your time and that you no longer have the time for your social life. But truth is that you do have enough time to spend with your family and friends if you just know how to track your time at work. You probably don't realize that part of the total time you spent "working" includes time spent chatting with colleagues, checking social media sites or playing Internet games. It only shows that if you only focus on your actual tasks the moment you turn on your computer, it will only take you 4 to 6 hours to complete them. As long as you dedicate your attention on what you are supposed to do and do not allow unnecessary interruptions in between, you can stay within schedule and still have the time that you need to mingle and socialize with people outside work.

Before buying though, you have to know what type of time tracker you need because there are a lot out there that contain features that do not necessarily help you. Most are just fancy add-ons that do not provide any essential help at all. Ask if it is web-based or the kind that requires installation. Which do you prefer? Does it have the ability to track time even without Internet connection?

Basically, time tracking tools will ask you to login. After which, you can create your task for the day and either check or uncheck a box to show if you are charging the job to your billable hours. You click a "start" button to begin. As soon as you are done or you need to take a break, you can click the "stop" button. This activity can be viewed in a log sheet that shows the total time you spent and the equivalent billable amount. This sheet along with other log sheets for this particular task or for a particular client is automatically turned into an invoice that will be directly sent to the client for billing purposes. This function alone makes cynics wrong about their belief that time tracking tools are just well-dressed digital stopwatches. Stopwatches cannot produce invoices that will enable you to bill your clients automatically and do not allow you to make a comprehensive evaluation of how you spend your time at work. Time tracking tools do.
