There are several different aspects to choosing a SQL backup program that you should consider, not the least of which is ease of use. Many companies buy backup programs, only to find that they are too complicated to install or too difficult to run. Therefore, they have a nice piece of software sitting on the shelf, and when their servers crash, the software is no help at all.

The two primary aspects of SQL backup software - backing up and restoring - need to be considered when purchasing the product. If a software package is too difficult to set up, or no one can figure out how to make it run on its own, then you need to find another one. But more importantly, you also have to understand how to restore your data and to do it quickly. In many cases, just hours can make the difference between staying in business or going out of business, and you won't have time to learn your software when your customers are waiting for your servers to go back up.

Any type of backup program should be able to be operated from a remote location. What this means is that not only can you activate the backup to run, but you will be saving the data in a remote location. Just in case your office is destroyed by Mother Nature, power surges, burglaries, or other disasters, your backup will be safely put away in a different location. This is one of the most important features of any backup and one you really need to insist on.
