Computers are like cars to the average person who has one. Everyone knows how to drive one but not everyone knows the mechanics of the insides, especially if something goes wrong. Not many people know how to fix their cars if something goes wrong. But unlike cars, one wrong move and you may cause pop up after pop appearing on your screen and every key you enter just makes it worse.

There are those individuals who put viruses on computers just for fun because they can and then there are those who intend to grab personal information to steal your identity. Whatever the reason, it's our job to make it as difficult as possible to keep information secure. The first step is to install some type of security software on the computer. There are several companies out there that provide firewalls and informs you when an application is being threatened.

While these systems aren't super expensive they are necessary in today's environment. Be advised these systems do need to be renewed annually and some of them have updates to their system that need to be installed. It may be irritating but keep in mind its purpose. Hackers are creative in the way they try to get you to download their virus. Some use the guise of a security alert and advise you to download now as there is a virus that is currently attacking your system. If this happens, don't be so quick to push the button. Make sure and check your security system and know that it is coming from your system and not the hackers.

Another tactic is to try and guide you to another site making you believe that you are going to your intended sight when you are actually going to their site. Tricky yes, but be observant because many of these hackers will do this when you are trying to get to a financial site. They seek credit card and bank information that can ruin your credit rating. Identity thief is rampant and it can take a long time before you can get things straightened out. Check the web address and make sure it matches the site you want to be and try to use secure sites.

Scammers will always be around. Computer security systems are just another step in protecting yourself, much like having a lock box at the bank. While nothing is 100% guaranteed is does provide a way to notify you if the potential of a virus is out there. Caution is advised when something seems unfamiliar pops up on your screen.
