How to Play DivX on Your Computer

DivX codec was created to let you play and make videos quickly but without losing quality. DivX is MPEG-4 based and many DVD players support it, so it is useful in many different areas.

“Codec” is an acronym meaning “compression/decompression.” It is an algorithm and computer program which encodes and decodes sections of video—compressing and decompressing these sections without losing too much quality.

Windows

First, download and install the DivX or XviD codecs. You can get these from various sources. See the discussion of these below. If you do not have the right codec installed on your computer, your computer won’t be able to decode the video, and won’t be able to play it.

Sometimes you will need to install separate codecs to help play video or to play audio. Some programs are available to help you know which codecs need to be installed. In addition, you can buy packages that will contain all the codecs you need.

After you have installed the codecs, you will be able to play your video on Windows Media Player.

Mac

First, download and install QuickTime DivX codecs. Also, download the DivX Doctor to fix the audio bug in AVI. Run DivX files through DivX Doctor before playing to fix the problem.

Make sure you know which codecs you will need. Read through different websites to see what is recommended, or buy a package that will include all the codecs you need. After the codecs are installed, you will be able to play your DivX files on QuickTime.
