Dynamics AX Development Projects with Consideration to Version 2012

Microsoft Dynamics AX customization work might be getting special leverage from the opening of MorphX Metadata in such tools as Microsoft Visual Studio.

Plus we see good opportunity to publish custom tables, queries and forms into Windows AX interface (so called fat client) and to Enterprise Portal (web user interface or so-called thin client).  We also liked the demo, where on Convergence 2011 Microsoft developer created web service out of custom query, published it and created Excel report, based on the service in a matter of minutes.  Another nice feature was Microsoft SQL Server Management Report, created directly in Microsoft Visual Studio, but based on the MorphX metadata originated AX query.  Let’s come through new cool, features of version 2012 as well as review old good days Axapta positioning on the US and International Corporate ERP market:

1. Public Sector Offer.  With the release 2012 this platform is recommended for non-profit organizations.  According to Microsoft Business Solutions presenters General Ledger module was re-architectured in order to support Fund Accounting.  Also ISV partners got new objects and features in GL with the aim to encourage non-for-profit accounting add-ons development and offering on the ISV market.  Traditionally, however, Microsoft Dynamics ERP family was featuring Dynamics GP for non-profit organizations, where Grant Management modules was based on some of the Analytical Accounting features

2. The paragraph above was about new niche for this upper mid-market Corporate ERP.  Let’s now move back to its traditional offer.  These are Process Manufacturing, Distribution, Supply Chain Management, Service Organization, Retail.  In our opinion Process Manufacturing is one of the most cool features and it seems to be the only offer from the whole Microsoft Dynamics ERP family.  In Retail, Distribution, SCM and Warehouse Management there are native modules as well as strong interest from the leading WMS providers.  Several words about process manufacturing – it is required in poultry and meat processing facilities, where you do not know how many pounds or kilograms of the end meat packages could be produced from one caw, chicken or pig.  Similar situation exists in mining industry: coal, iron, gold, copper, etc.  The ore is raw materials, but its richness is only predicted, but not known for sure

3. International Expansion.  Even smaller companies are now expanding internationally with opening production facilities in China, Brazil, Indonesia, Russian Federation.  AX is translated to the major foreign languages (including the ones where hieroglyphs are required), localized from the stand point of tax filing legislation compliance.  Microsoft Business Solutions promotes AX Worldwide and we do recommend it for your foreign facility.  Sometimes Axapta implementation cost is underestimated.  It is upper mid-market Corporate ERP application and if you have small subsidiary somewhere in Siberia or Brazil with only few users – the implementation  cost might be not proportional to the magnitude of the business activity.  If you are planning on implementing Axapta for your international facility, good advice is to think about implementation and software licensing budget.  If you think that your budget is below forty thousand US dollars – then AX might be not feasible solution.   Consider another ERP brand, oriented to smaller businesses, such as SAP Business One.  In the case where you are expanding to Brazil, consider locally programmed ERP solutions Microsiga.  If you are expanding to Russia, take a look at 1S Bukhgalteria (1S Accounting as it translates from Russian)
