Dynamics AX or Formerly Known as Axapta Data Migration Puzzle

General wisdom doesn’t recommend complex data export and import projects, as each accounting application is different and it is not an easy task to find the way to match the fields in old accounting tables to be migrated to new Corporate ERP.  Axapta is really flexible and powerful in its customizability, but data conversion project requires programming budget and you need to decide within your organization if you are ready to do deep data migration or not.  If you are looking for new Corporate ERP system, we have to set expectations first.  AX is not for small business.  You should not expect out of the box canned installation and implementation.  Let’s take a look at some Axapta data import tools:

1. Excel Import.  It is good idea to open MS Excel worksheets as initial files.  However keep in mind that modern computers (Microsoft Windows product lines, as well as Linux and Mac) rely on RAM concept and swapping to computer hard drive (typically C: in Windows terminology).  You can export only limited number of documents and lines, in our estimation Windows 7 experiences bottleneck at around seven hundred thousands of documents.  Of course filling out Excel worksheets seems to be user friendly idea, but it is probably not the way to undertake massive data conversion project

2. Comparing to other products in Microsoft Dynamics family.  First one to compare is Microsoft Dynamics GP or formerly known as Great Plains Dynamics.  Comparing to former Axapta GP has Integration Management module, allowing you to do most of the initial data conversion and even ongoing integration (for example ecommerce shopping cart or custom EDI) in it.  Integration Manager was probably the locomotive of Great Plains Dynamics and eEnterprise success in late 1990th and earlier 2000th.  In Axapta to accomplish data migration work you rather have to deploy combination of various technologies

3. Version 2012.  Here we are hearing the messages that Dynamics AX could be modified in MorphX or in Microsoft Visual Studio without  single line of X++, C# or another programming language code written.  We do not believe in quick fix solutions, X++ software development will probably stay for a reasonable time.  Previous version 2009 was also trying to advance to enable Axapta metadata to programmers and non-programmers

4. Axapta on the international arena.  Dynamics AX is triumphing in such regions as China, India, Kazakhstan, Russian Federation, Uzbekistan.  If you are expanding internationally AX might be an ideal solution.  It is translated to major foreign languages and localized in key world regions
