Version 2010 was introduced in April, 2010 and was demonstrated on Convergence 2010 in Atlanta. It might be difficult to judge which feature is revolutionary and which is just small improvement. In our opinion in 2010/11.0 emailing for Sales and Purchasing transactions is very impressive.
Also, we would like to mention copy functionality in security. Plus, now in some of the Windows you have right-click pop-up menus. On the homepage you can now switch on the metrics, based on Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services. Lookups for Customer, vendor, Employee, Item, Salesperson, Vendor could be at this point customizable. We would like also to mention the shift toward working on your home page, versus opening document via traditional cascading menus. There are also improvements in Microsoft Workflow Integration (outside of the scope). Vendors are now available in Integration Manager via eConnect connector. Let’s try to concentrate on the major improvements:
1. Emailing. Traditionally there were add-ons, allowing you to deploy such features as SQL mail to email some of the documents from the batch printing routine in PDF. In 2010, however you have more flexible emailing functionality. From your Home page, when selecting Sales series on the left side and then Sales Order Transactions (or All Sales Transaction) on the top of the page in Action Pane you can pick Send Email feature and send electronic versions of the Invoice, Order, Quote in Word Template format (DOCX, PDF, or XPS) or transform traditional Dexterity based Report Writer version of the report into HTML format and include in email. Regarding Word templates, for each company you can select its own graphical logo (it uploads to Reports.dic, so old valid graphical file formats are still in place: JPG, BMP, etc.). Please, note that emailing functionality requires MAPI, it might not work, if you are outsourcing your email server and connecting to it via popular POP3. But, the majority of GP customers, especially mid-market and large companies are Microsoft shops, where Exchange is a norm, so MAPI enabling is a good options for the majority or customers
2. Security Copying in 2010. Being Great Plains consultant you probably remember that security model was completely redesigned for version 10.0, where it was changed from static forms, reports, tables, to roles and tasks. This process was a little bumpy, and you may expect the overhaul to have issues with translating the old security realm into new rules in version update. With the release of GP 10.0 Service pack one, the issues were addressed. What is cool about 2010/11.0 – you can now copy security task, role or alternate/modified forms and reports, or simply security setting from old user to the new one (this is useful when you are hiring the deputy or somebody who is supposed to work on the same level as another employee)
3. Metrics and SSRS. More predefined SQL Server Reporting Services Reports are available in the out-of-shelf package, and good news is – you can deploy these reports as metrics on your home page
4. Right Mouse Click Pop Up Menus in the Forms. This is definitely an innovation, allowing Microsoft to capitalize on the intuitive interface discovery skills, coming from the familiarity of the interface in Outlook, Word, Excel. Here the idea is simple – if the computer user knows how to navigate Microsoft Office applications, she or he should be comfortable to navigate Dynamics ERP application interface and do intuitive self-discovery
5. Shifting from Cascading Menus to Home Page navigation. Here we see additional improvements to the concept of List area, Action Pane with Status bar on the top and info pane on the bottom. Old navigation via menus is still there and probably should stay indefinitely, however the new navigation via the home page is more robust, and we assume that Microsoft is developing it to make all Dynamics ERP products to look similar or at least recognizable for the familiar user of one of the Dynamics products
6. Support domestically in the USA, Canada, Mexico and internationally.
