However in some cases, especially when you retail the items where your cash register operator is actually sales engineer and consultant – you may consider just install Dynamics GP user workstation as POS terminal and train the salesman to use Sales Order Processing Invoice as POS transaction entry.  This approach could work, where each consultant has only dozen of sales per day (assuming each one is several hundred or couple of grand in the value).  If you are looking for typical merchandise store automation with the customers staying in line to your cashiers – you probably have to pay the price for upscale POS terminals with barcode scanner, Tabloid, Cash Register support, Signature Capture device, and even on the Warehouse floor you need such powerful barcode technology based applications, as Warehouse Management System.  Each Corporate ERP application in our time has its own unique interface and integration tools, this is why you have to review the options, available for your chosen ERP system.  This publication covers Dynamics GP only:

1. If you have only dozen of sales transactions per day, selling something, that requires consulting and sales engineering help, as we already mentioned, that magnitude of POS transactions could be handled directly in Dynamics GP user interface.  However Retail business often uses such sales boosting instruments as Sales discounts, coupons, credit card sponsored trade discounts, items on sale within the dates range.  If you need some or all of these features, you may still consider to implement high profile POS terminals, where POS or Retail Management extensions to Dynamics GP should be available to support these features

2. What are my options for Dynamics GP POS or Retail extensions?  In the case when you have stores, that are not permanently connected via internet to the Headquarters (where your Corporate ERP application is residing), we would probably have you to consider Microsoft Retail Management System (MS RMS) first, where everything you can think of is already there (however you will need to be ready to purchase required POS hardware).  Alba Spectrum has integration which brings POS daily sales into Dynamics GP SOP or Accounts Receivable module, synchronizes Purchasing activity from RMS Headquarters to GP POS module (where you can enjoy powerful and flexible items barcode label printing), plus it synchronizes inventory transfers between Dynamics GP sites and RMS stores (bidirectional)

3. Warehouse Management System extensions for Dynamics GP.  Here you have such functionalities as Inventory Replenishment (extending Dynamics GP POP Purchase Receipt transaction to barcoding), Inventory Adjustment and Cycle Count (similar transactions in Great Plains Inventory Control module), Order Fulfillment (we do not think that Retail company would need something like that, until it decides to enter eCommerce order allocation and fulfillment business)

4. EDI (Electronic Document Interchange).  There are the situations where you do not need fully featured EDI module (supporting all the EDI protocols and interfaces), until you do not care about the software price (very unlikely).  In small wholesale and retail scenarios, especially when you are replenishing your inventory from just a few suppliers, we recommend you to consider custom EDI with just required protocols enabled

5. Crossing international borders with Dynamics GP.  Here you have Multicurrency module, allowing you to enter transactions in virtually all the modules of Great Plains: SOP, POP, RM, PM, GL, Payroll to name few examples
