When you are implementing Corporate ERP application the implementation process is often divided into several phases. Sales cycle and licenses acquisition are followed by data conversion, user training and going into production with core functionality.
Following phases are associated with more technically challenging projects such as integration with legacy database, customization, modification and managerial reporting. Consulting firms are also different in their preferred project profile. There are resellers who are pursuing initial software sale followed by basic installation and implementation. Revenue stream of such firm has two hives. First one software margin as they place the order with reseller discount. And the second hive is billable consulting hours. The most popular work in initial phases is user training or so-called functional consulting. Consulting firm may have just functional consulting work form and no technical folks. When your initial phases are behind you and you are approaching your VAR with technology challenging requirements it should not be a surprise that your initial reseller might show very little interest if any at all. At this point you should begin your research in approaching and evaluation of the technology oriented organizations:
1. Technical consulting. Technology firms often do not pursue initial software licenses sale as the first priority. If you do not fight for new customers then there is no need in having functional consultant in staff as well as telemarketing folks. The source of revenue is billable hours from programming, forms and reports modification and similar projects
2. Nationwide market. Programming firm might be in the position when local market is too small and doesn’t provide enough business in its unique specialization. In this situation organization appeals to nationwide market in the United States and often crosses national borders and offers services internationally. 7. Reporting. Depending on the report classification as Financial, Managerial or Transaction form printout you are selecting Microsoft Management Reporter or FRx, SSRS or Crystal Reports or integrated Report Writer
