The Epson WorkForce Pro GT-S50 Document Imaging Scanner is a professional-grade scanner made for an organization that needs documents online accurately and quickly as the duplex-scanning GT-S50 not only scans standard documents, but also business or embossed medical insurance cards and other documents.
Epson's WorkForce Pro is made for heavy duty business use. It has a daily use cycle of up to 1200 sheets and it includes a 75-page auto sheet feeder. The key to the WorkForce Pro is its built-in duplex-reading capability. In other words, rather than: Making a copy; Turning it over; Turning the copy over; Reinserting the copy into the paper feeder; Making a copy of the backside of the document.
All you have to do is feed the document through the WorkForce Pro and both sides are automatically copied. It can copy color, grayscale or atonal copies which makes it ideal for businesses such as a doctor's office or dental facility where they usually have to copy your insurance card and this scanner makes it much easier. It is also fairly easy to locate within your office as it is only 15.8 by 12.6 by 11.5 inches. It weighs about 11 pounds, so it isn't a huge device but you do have to remember that there's feeder at the rear of the WorkForce Pro so you will have to make sure that access to the document feeder is clear at the back. It's also a good idea to ensure that the page stacker at the other end is pretty open, too.
As you are figuring out where to install it in your office, it's a good idea to remember that this is not a native network device. It was made for an older generation of electronics that relied on print servers. The WorkForce Pro has a USB port that, when interfaced with a PC, can make this part of a network. Setting it up requires the usual necessity of a PC or laptop that you interface with the PC as a specialized device. You have to be sure that you have the software disk available so that you can set the PC up to act as the WorkForce Pro's network interface.
As noted, this is a heavy-duty scanner that can handle up to 1200 sheets per day. In action, it is simplicity itself. If you are going to use it as part of a medical facility, you will probably purchase it with the special card feeder so that all you have to do is insert the card, the WorkForce Pro reads it and it is loaded in your system. If you are using as part of a patient's information, the chances are that the patient's file is open so that the ID card will be included with the information about the patient.
The WorkForce Pro uses Epson's GTS50 environment and drivers. Its driver package includes compatibility for Twain, EMC and ISIS devices. The reason for this choice of drivers is so the WorkForce Pro is certified by Kofax, a leader in the document imaging industry.
The WorkForce Pro does have a couple of interesting features we found helpful. After learning that it has a 10-document queue, we found out that the keys in the front allow you to select a document and move it to the head of the queue. You can also initiate a scan ofdocuments up to 8.5x36 inches using energy-efficient light source.
The WorkForce Pro also gives you a detachable two-line 16-character display so you can not only see the documents in queue. You can also use the display to determine whether the file will be saved or it will be launched as part of another app.
The WorkForce Pro is made for a busy office or business where scanning is needed more than a couple of times a day. In this atmosphere, it should be a very good device.
