Here in the United States we have healthy competition between such popular platforms as Microsoft Dynamics, SAP, Oracle, Sage, NetSuite and others scaling from small business up to large publicly traded corporation.

At the same time the presence of such a lucrative ERP software market might be one of the reasons for publishing companies to pay only partial attention to or in some cases even ignore international accounting applications market.  However software companies originated from Europe are different and in fact they have to architect their packages with such international features as multicurrency,ERP for International Facility or SAP Business One Articles foreign language support in user interface and even Unicode or double byte compliant alphabets typically with hieroglyphs.  This small publication is about SAP B1:

1. Initial international expansion and moving into the market in the United States.  In earlier 2006 we were watching SAP efforts to open the door to Brazil by opening mass training and certification centers in Sao Paulo.  ERP consulting companies earlier involved in pioneering with Microsoft Solomon, Great Plains and Navision had trend to add SAP BO line as well.  In Brazil situation was probably unique as brand name accounting application competition for small businesses was not really strong.  Microsoft Dynamics GP, NAV and AX are rather for mid-market or larger enterprises.  Oracle Ebusiness Suite also referred as Applications or Financials is obviously flexible but again it is good fit for established upper mid-market or large companies as well.  When SAP localized Business One for Brazilian market the strongest competition in time was probably from locally developed packages such as Microsiga

2. In the United States.  Here the situation on the market is more complex as virtually all worldwide ERP brands are present and competing with each other: SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Business Solutions, Sage and NetSuite to name a few.  Business One back in 2004 and 2005 was definitely very strong and its features were a bargain for small businesses but accounting system was probably already implemented in most of the companies back in earlier 1990th meaning that the space was already taken by other packages.  SB1 expansion was reasonably slow but gradual at least in our opinion

3. Multinational Companies and Business One.  This is natural trend in the business world when mid-market enterprise is expanding internationally in order to take advantages of competitive labor and production as well as get a better grip on international distribution.  Here we see and would like to mention such strong points of B1 as availability virtually worldwide due to the fact that SAP is carefully promoting its localization in major world countries and regions.  Software licenses cost is reasonably small and this makes it to be competitive for small overseas branches.  You can export GL trial balance to Excel and consolidate with your corporate accounting as such Financial Reporting packages as FRx or Microsoft Management Reporter consolidation on the level of Excel worksheets.  Let’s now take a look at several world regions

4. Brazil.  Here Business One is available in Brazilian Portuguese and supporting federal and states legislation.  There is competition between B1, Microsiga and Dynamics AX formerly known as Axapta.  Microsoft is promoting Dynamics AX but there is also strong presence Navision or how it is currently known as Dynamics NAV.  Some customers are on Solomon and Dynamics GP is pretty much out of the scenes as it is not translated to Brazilian Portuguese

5. Russian Federation.  SAP B1 is competing with 1S Accounting (1S Bukhgalteria in Russian) as well as Microsoft Dynamics AX and NAV.  Traditional Soviet accounting with predefined chart of accounts and transactions workflow is a bit challenging for foreign packages.  Business One is good for such industries as mining and food with its small business manufacturing and MRP modules

6. China, assembly on order or small volume discrete manufacturing.  First of all B1 is localized in the sense of being available in Chinese user interface as well as compliant to Chinese business legislation
