A USB flash drive is a data storage device that includes flash memory with an integrated Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface. USB flash drives are typically removable and rewritable, and physically much smaller than a floppy disk.USB flash drives are often used for the same purposes for which floppy computer disks or CD-ROMs were utilized, i.e., for storage, back-up and move of computer files. They are smaller, much quicker, have thousands of times more capability, and are more durable and dependable because they have no moving parts.

Formatting is needed when you completely want to remove all the data from your flash drive or to remove corrupt files from it. You can also format a flash drive to change the file storage system from FAT (File Allocation Table) to NTFS (New Technology File System) or vice versa in order to make the drive compatible with other devices such as digital cameras and music players.

The steps to format a flash drive are as follows,

·         Connect the USB flash drive to your computer by plugging it into one of the USB port slots.

·         Wait for your computer to detect the flash drive.

You will see a pop-up bubble in the task bar at the bottom right of your screen to notify you that a flash drive has been installed to your computer successfully and is ready to use.

·         Open the Start menu from the bottom-left of your screen and click on My Computer.

·         Please right click on your flash drive that you have just installed on your computer.

It will come in the list of ‘devices with removable storage’.

·         Click on "Format" from the pop-up menu.

This will open the format window with window title indicating which drive you want to format.

·         You will see a window dialogue box, indicating the capacity of your flash drive.

·         Tick the box next to ‘quick format’, if you want to check the flash drive hardware functioning properly and if not leave it unticked.

·         Let the allocation unit size remain as the default allocation size.

·         Select the file system that you want your flash drive formatted in. The file system attributes which will come are FAT32, NTFS, and exFAT.

·         Press the Start button at the bottom of the Format window after you have finalized your selections.

·         Confirm your action by pressing the OK button in the pop-up window.

These are the ways by which all your data will be deleted according to specification.
