Basically, a keylogger is a piece of software or even a hardware device that logs every key user press on keyboard. However, it can capture personal messages, passwords, credit card numbers, and everything else user types.

Keyloggers are generally installed by malware,Get Aware of Hardware Keyloggers Articles but they may also be installed by someone to have an active eye on activities of their closed ones. Hardware keyloggers are perfect for corporate espionage.

How a Keylogger Would Get On Computer (Brief Insights)

Most keyloggers on usual computers turn up as malware. If computer becomes compromised, the malware may take in a keylogger or function as a Trojan that downloads the keylogger along with other damaging software. Keyloggers are a popular form of malware since they allow criminals to steal credit card numbers, passwords, and other sensitive data.

Keystroke-logging software may also be installed by someone closed. Some employers might install keystroke loggers on their employees’ computers to supervise everything they do, or just to inspect employees they’re suspicious about. Laws vary about when this is legal from authority to jurisdiction

Hardware Keyloggers

In this regard, some keyloggers can be implemented totally as hardware devices. A typical desktop computer has a keyboard that connects to the back of the computer using a USB cable. If someone were to sneak in, unplug the keyboard’s USB cable, then attach a specialized USB device between the computer’s USB port and the keyboard’s USB connector, the device could function as a keylogger. Sitting in the center, it could interrupt keyboard signals from the keyboard, store them on the device, and then pass the keystrokes to the computer so the whole thing would show to be working normally. Security software on the computer wouldn’t be able to spot this keylogger, as it runs exclusively in hardware. If the computer were hidden under a table, no one would notice the device.

The person could then come back a few days later to grab the device and sneak off with it, leaving no trace of keylogging software or suspicious network activity.

However, if one is worried about hardware keyloggers, just check the back of the computer and ensure there’s no suspicious device between keyboard cable and the computer itself.

How Keyloggers Function

Keylogging software runs hidden in the background, making a note of each keystroke one type. Software could scan through the file for certain types of text for instance, it could look for sequences of numbers that look like credit card numbers and upload them to a malicious server so they can be harmed.

Keylogging software may also be combined with other types of computer-monitoring software, so the attacker would be able to see what you typed when you visited bank’s website and narrow in on the information they want. A keylogger could detect the first keystrokes you typed into an online game or chat program, stealing user’s password.

Hardware Keylogger Detection

Principally, Hardware Keyloggers come in two versions:

  • As small devices about the size of AA battery that is plugged in-line with keyboard.
  • As a normal looking keyboard with an internal keylogger, or Trojan Keyboard.

These devices are usually used by companies to screen employees, private investigators looking for proof, or actually serious identity thieves who want to keep track of what user does on his computer.

Hardware keyloggers are commonly advertised as being enhanced aspect than software keyloggers since they are undetectable.  A hardware KeyLogger is most often installed between keyboard and computer.

Removal Of  Hardware Keylogger:

To remove a hardware keylogger, whether it is an in sequence model or a trojan keyboard, go after these steps carefully:

  1. Power off computer and unplug it as it could damage system if user attempts to remove the keylogger while computer is running.
Cautiously disconnect the keyboard from computer.
    3. If it's an inline keylogger, simply remove it.  If it's a trojan keyboard, swap it with a known safe one.
    4. Plug the keyboard directly back into the computer.  Make sure that it is plugged in completely, and be gentle as the connectors are somewhat fragile.
    5. That's all!  Turn system back on and run Spycop to make sure that any of the software keyloggers or spy programs are not running.
