Great Plains Customization: ReportWriter modified and custom reports overview

In Microsoft Dynamics GP Report Writer is integrated reports modification tool, where you can modify such reports as Blank SOP Invoice form or Purchase Order to place your company logo there. 

More advanced and sophisticated customizing scenarios are when you are altering chosen report by opening it with Great Plains Dexterity project and adding custom functions.  In this case you can place on SOP Blank Invoice form something, which doesn’t belong to Sales Order Processing module – vendor invoice number (which is popular in the case if you are in transportation and you use agent settlement report, where your shippers are customers and vendors at the same time).  Let’s review Report Writer modification options:

1.       Modified Reports.  These reports you can do on your own as the user.  Tools->Customization->Report Writer.  Then pick the report to modify and you can change fields location, add, or take off fields.  Please be aware that you can add fields from the tables associated with the report.  In the case if the table is not associated, you can add the association, typically if the table belongs to the same module.

2.       Logo placing guidelines.  GP is Microsoft Dexterity application, which is the shell, written in C programming language, this places some restrictions on modern graphical printer drivers, when you are adding pictures (such as logos) to your RW reports.  Please research your printer requirements and compatibilities in Microsoft Dynamics GP Customer Source, or contact your GP VAR

3.       Dexterity Customized Reports.  We recommend you to contact your GP ISV partner to see if they have Dex developer in staff with experience to customize existing report.  As the highlight – there are two options – fist is when in Dexterity you create the function with prefix rw_.  This function then will be available in the alternate modified report.  To create alternate modified report, you simply port it from Dynamics.Dic to your Dex customization dictionary.  The second option is to create report in Dex from scratch – in this case you are the master of the situation and free in your modification choices.
