There is a inherent contradiction in today’s technological developments. On the one hand there are tremendous breakthroughs such as tablet computers whose potential has yet to be determined,Of Innovators and Imitators Articles and online software whose scope was unthinkable a few years ago, and on the other there is a merciless commercial war which brings forth the most despicable strategies. It’s a visceral confrontation between talent and profit, one which is at the heart of all commercial relationships.

On January 18th 2011 Apple released financial results which blew past forecasts, cementing its reputation as successful organization. Its detractors had chimed all along that the company could be in decline, that its products would not survive the competition, and indeed there was cause for concern as their trademark platforms such as the Iphone and the Ipad were pitted against some intimidating competition in the form of the numerous different models of smartphones sporting competing operating systems such as Android, the next generation of interfaces with Windows Phone 7, and a slew of Ipad imitations. Yet despite the odds, Apple confirms its status as the leader of the industry. So what makes Apple products so successful, and why is the competition incapable of stealing the crown?

Apple does have significant drawbacks, I will be the first to admit it. As a Iphone developer I have had to deal with the exclusivity of their compatibility requirements, and with all kinds of glitches caused by their obsession with secrecy. Honestly I understand why some people hate them, however there is one thing that I have always admired, its genuine talent. And despite the clumsiness of some of their processes, I have to give them credit for successfully commercializing remarkable products, some of which belonged a couple of years ago to the realm of science fiction. And despite all the bad noise about their practices, it would be against my principles to give any of their competitors any credit for reverse engineering their proprietary designs and commercializing them as new ideas. A monkey can copy somebody else’s design, there is no talent in that. Of course Google is no monkey, I do no deny them the merit of having revolutionized online technology. However when it comes to the next generation of handheld devices, Apple takes the cake, and rightfully so. There is a reason why their products sell, its because they are superior, and that kind of performance comes with the territory.
