When your company makes the decision to expand internationally either via acquisitions or via opening new branch overseas the question about ERP system might be pretty challenging. At this time popular destinations are China, Brazil and South America as well as East Europe and Russian Federation with its Siberia region.

The idea to acquire new user licenses and open your existing accounting application to international offices might be good however there is a need to do your homework.  We found large volume of requests about Microsoft Dynamics GP deployment in these countries and we have to admit that even if theoretically it is possible it might be not practical.  Its Dexterity architecture at this time doesn’t support Unicode and Microsoft is leaning toward Dynamics AX on the international markets including Chinese,SAP Business One as Small Business ERP Localized Internationally Articles Brazilian and Russian.  We need to review Corporate ERP localization theory before we continue:

1. ERP localization for specific country typically includes two aspects where the first one is supporting foreign language or in other words user interface should be translated as well as database platform should support foreign alphabet.  And the second aspect includes compliance to foreign country tax code and business legislation.  The second one is in fact more difficult to achieve especially when you are thinking about doing localization internally.  Taxes and legislation in regional powers such as Brazil or Russian Federation are more complex and in fact differ from what we have here in the United States.  It is recommended to deploy ERP platform which is supported directly by ERP software publisher in the specific country.  If you think that you should choose Microsoft Dynamics then we recommend you to consider Dynamics AX or formerly known as Axapta in the countries where Dynamics GP formerly known as Great Plains is not localized

2. Well, what if Dynamics AX is too expensive for our small subsidiary in Brazil?  There are several options.  First option could be worked through local consulting firms and check with them if something is popular in the country.  For example in Russian Federation it might be 1S Bukhgalteria or in Brazil it is likely Microsiga.  Or the second option is to check with other established brands such as SAP.  In fact SAP has its Business One localized in the majority of world regions and it fits small to midsize companies.  There are pluses and probably minuses in both options.  For example if you are choosing Microsiga or 1S then it might be ideal from the standpoint of compliance.  However it is more difficult to control and provide internal audit.  SAP B1 in its turn could be deployed on the central server in the United States and exposed to overseas users via Citrix or Microsoft Terminal Services.  This method gives your central IT department full control over the database and such extensions as integration, consolidated financial and managerial reporting.  Internal auditor can switch user interface from something like Chinese or Brazilian Portuguese into English and do the job directly in Business One

3. Unicode support and enabling hieroglyph based alphabets.  The number of Chinese hieroglyphs exceeds the possibility to encode all of them in one byte of information.  This is why Unicode standard was designed to cover all the modern languages characters.  Each character in encoded in two bytes
