When you are selecting new ERP application important thing is compile requirements list and decide if you like to stick to brand names such as SAP, Microsoft or Oracle or ready to try unknown software vendors. One of the techniques to compile checkbox is review the cases of successful implementations in your industry or verticals.

Please note that this paper is not intended to programmers or software development community.  It is rather for managers and decision makers.  It is written in the form of several paragraphs with bullets and then we are answering several popular questions:

1. Small Manufacturing or Assembly on Order. Northern Illinois in the Chicagoland area is perfect location for small distribution companies with finished good shipment to the West and East coasts as well as to the South.  This customer is engaged in trucks with custom function such as cranes.  Even if you think that production functionality is something available in high end MRP packages those are not suitable for small company due to the high cost,SAP Business One Case Studies Small ERP and Rich Functionality Articles expensive implementation and user training.  Business One has pretty decent discrete manufacturing functionality which did the job

2. International Business.  This company is well known producer of artificially flavored soda and juices with low natural juice percentage.  Initially in the headquarters they used Great Plains Dynamics.  Popular market is South America and Brazil.  Company produces concentrate and then ships it in gallons to regional distributor within their franchisees network.  There is couple of challenges.  One is production which was in time implemented in GP Bill of Materials module.  And the second challenge is Brazilian production facility accounting in the sense of supporting user interface in Brazilian Portuguese and compliance to Brazilian legislation.  The second one is not easy to achieve as over there they have SPED (Public Digital Bookkeeping System with requirements to make public via electronic filing AR, AP invoices as well as GL to CPA and lawyers communities and other authorities) and very complicated tax rates and formulas.  Around 2004 Microsoft Business Solutions in Sao Paulo contracted GP localization for Brazilian software market.  But later one project was cancelled and currently Microsoft is marketing AX in this region.  SAP B1 was natural choice as it has decent Bill of Materials as well as it is localized in the region.  Integration was implemented on the GL level where transactions are shipped to Chicago office as text files and then GP Integration Manager moves them to the company database.  Initially it was tandem of two accounting applications but later one headquarters replaced Great Plains with SAP BO

3. Web Views or Nationwide Sales Force.  Here are two questions.  First one is the cost of licenses and the second is web enabled user interface.  When you have hundreds of sales agents across the United States you probably do not want to purchase CRM licenses for every folk out there in the fields.  On the other hand you would probably prefer something that is IT support free and web browser based application is the best answer.  Company selected add-ons Web View available through ISV channel

Let’s now take questions.Q.  Are there limitations on the maximum number of users?A.  Here in United States application is often presented as optimal for small businesses.  But in other countries especially such as Brazil we heard that system could be recommended for multinational corporations and other mid-market companies with the number of named users up to one hundred or even two hundred

Q.  We are mid-market company with the attributes of multinational corporation such as offices in China, Spain, Brazil and Russian Federation.  Is B1 a good choice for us?A.  We recommend you to consider this system.  Here are the arguments.  It is localized in the sense of supporting user interface in Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian (and many other languages).  There are nuances such as SPED for example as we described above.  In RF there are challenging state approved GL account tax filing requirements.  In each country we recommend you to see the demo where your local CPA is one of the attendees

Q.  We are on the outdated version 2005A and our consulting partner is no longer addressing our needs.  They indicated that we have to migrate to release 8.82 in order to receive quality service.  We feel that software does the job and we do not have the budget to reenroll in annual contract with SAP.  Is it possible to help us in supporting our current needs?A.  Of course it is always a good idea to be on the current release.  However it is likely that you would have to switch from local provider to somebody who runs nationwide technical support center.  Support is via web sessions.  Try to Google the web and find several candidates to call
