ERP applications have their own life cycles and at this time SAP B1 is in expansion mode here in Northern Illinois as well as in the United States. At this point we assume that you have already acquired and implemented Business One and thinking about second phase with custom integration or sophisticated Crystal Report design

We would like to give you some background in technology and consulting firm selection recommendations.  Before we begin we should let you know that there are third party integration tools such as iBolt for example available for purchase.  In our paper we will be reviewing native SAP instruments only.  Let’s begin with architecture notes:

1. Three tier architecture.  It has database layer,SAP Business One Customization and Reporting in Chicagoland Articles application server and client workstation.  These three layers provide data entry and update reliability comparing to two tier architecture where client workstation talks directly to the database.  However if you are bypassing application server and trying to push records directly to the SQL database via insert or update statements there is high chance to compromise data integrity.  This is why integration based on in-house coded SQL stored procedures is not recommended.  If you are programmer consider coding with Software Development Kit libraries and code snippets and see next paragraph

2. Software Development Kit.  This tool has code samples in C# and VB.Net and it is friendly to Microsoft Visual Studio programmer.  SDK coding is safe as you are logging into the system as it would of happen via user interface and then you are adding, deleting or updating master records and documents

3. User Defined Fields and Tables.  It is common practice in SAP BO to create user defined objects.  These objects are available via automatic simple interface without the need to do any programming.  These tables go to metadata which is hosted in SQL Server Company database.  They are neutral to version upgrade projects so feel free to create user defined tables and fields.  When you are programming integration with external database good idea is to push records from outside world to user defined table and then switch on SDK compliant code to move documents directly to SAP Business One core tables

4. Custom Managerial Reporting.  We recommend you Crystal Report as this tool was acquired by SAP and now Business Objects are part of the company.  When you are designing report in Crystal we recommend you to abstract data query in SQL View or Stored Procedure.  SQL is more powerful in pulling and joining data from the tables comparing to Crystal Report Wizard.  We have seen numerous report design projects where developer was in learning curve and tried to deploy wizard and ended up with duplicate records and client frustration

5. Chicago Connection.  SAP B1 is popular on the international Small Business ERP market and we believe that it is a good fit to Chicagoland distribution hub where we see large cluster of assembly on order type of small manufacturers shipping final goods USA nationwide, Canada and overseas.  Business One is pretty robust and flexible in such functionalities as Inventory Management, Picking and Packing, Simple Discrete Manufacturing and Bill of Materials
