Chicagoland is perfect place for midsize and small distribution business with its highway network and railroad hub. SAP B1 in its turn offers robust functionality in simple manufacturing on order, inventory picking and packing and warranty contracts in addition to standard accounting modules such as Sales, Purchasing, General Ledger, CRM and Human Resources

From the competition standpoint it is probably worth to mention Microsoft Dynamics GP and NetSuite from the upper price level and QuickBooks and Peachtree corporate edition from the lower price diapason.  When you are implementing Small Business ERP in Supply Chain Management,SAP Business One Customization in Chicago and Suburbs Articles Logistics and Distribution chances are high that you need altered logic, including interface modification, managerial reporting and integration with external system or database.  SAP BO is often sold through small accounting consulting firms where you might expect perfect so-called functional consulting services but when you need technology consulting or in other words programming small firm might be not positioned to do the job.  In this small publication we would like to give you initial information about customization and integration tools and recommendations in handling custom software development projects:

1. Software Development Kit.  Usually coding is done in VB or C# in Microsoft Visual Studio.  Even when you are moving data to Business One from Linux or in other words non-Microsoft Windows computer platform SDK is good tool as integration could be wrapped as SOAP XML Web Service.  Software Development Kit allows you to program both integration and user interface modification.  Integration often requires you to create user defined tables or add user defined fields to existing tables.  It could be done directly in user interface.  And then in SDK project you should be able to reference new objects in your code

2. Data Transfer Workbench.  This tool is popular in initial data migration to your Business One.  Your consultant fills CSV templates often referred as Excel templates in consulting jargon.  However you can deploy DTW in ongoing integration from external database via ODBC connection.  The secret is to imitate CSV template format in your SQL View.  Data Transfer Workbench could be deployed in simple data import project in our opinion and when you are looking for complex data move take a look at ISV products such as iBolt

3. Direct SQL programming.  It is not recommended as SAP B1 deploys three tiers architecture.  Intervening with SQL insert, update or stored procedure could compromise data integrity.  Revisit SDK programming approach as it validates business logic and similar to direct data entry or update via user interface

4. Crystal Reports.  We recommend you to abstract data pulling in SQL View or Stored Procedure and test it in SQL Server Management Studio query before opening Crystal Report Designer.  Especially in complex managerial reports such as sales commission.  When your report designer is novice and tries to use shortcuts such as wizards then you might expect such issues as duplicate rows

5. What to do if your customization project was screwed up?  Ask for second opinion.  There are chances that programming offer is not available from local VAR community.  If this is the case try to appeal to nationwide firms who should be able to help you via remote support and web sessions
