Running outdate version is often related to the fact that your company had to come through several difficult years and was not able to pay for annual support contract with SAP.
If you do not have active contract then you do not have license key to update to the recent release. It is common practice for ERP system brand name vendors including SAP and Microsoft to support only two or three versions at the time and when new version is released then support for the older on is scheduled to expire. Does this mean that there is no option to get technical problem resolved? Let’s talk about possible options:
1. Tech support is available through Partner Channel as there are consulting firm with call centers with emphasis on legacy versions consulting. However here be ready to switch from local to remote consulting. Call centers have to cover nationwide or at least regional markets and service is delivered via web session and VOIP conferences. The advantage is the fact that SAP partner has access to knowledge base including old releases known issues. In the future such firm might become your broker in reenrollment to SAP program and help you with future version update. Currently you might expect penalty in the amount of all unpaid years but in the future SAP might announce point forgiveness programs. We are watching what competition is doing and giving you examples
2. User interface should be recognizable to consultants who have experience with current version 8.82. This good news and we believe that this option should cover new user training. It might be challenging however to do something like data repair and helping with customizations or integrations programmed in Software Development Kit. If you are large organization then you may consider to introduce new position and hire SAP BO consultant certified in your version where part of the shift she or he will be supporting your legacy ERP application and other time engaged in accounting routines
3. Weak points. The older is the release the more incompatible it is with modern technologies such as SQL Server 2008, Windows 2008 64 bit edition and Excel in MS Office 2010 just to name few examples.
