For decades, workers have taken documents home in their briefcase and used the telephone to keep in touch with others at the office while they were doing some work at a remote location. As technology progressed, more tools became available to make telecommuting easier and more practical. First came the fax machine, allowing workers to send and receive documents while away of the office. Then the internet truly revolutionized how we see telecommuting, by allowing workers to exchange a lot more data between their office and a remote location. Remote Accesssoftware has also been of a significant help with this, allowing a user to take complete control over a remote system from a distant location, anywhere in the world.
There have been many studies and surveys done on telecommuting all over the world. Recently, according to information collected by the software maker Citrix and presented at a seminar that was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, over 72% of the work force that is employed in offices frequently does work while away from the office. Obviously, Remote Desktop Softwareis one of the major driving forces responsible for the proliferation of this “remote workforce” both in South Africa and around the world. Businesses are now realizing that for most tasks, their employees do not need to be in the office anymore and can do some work from a remote location, no matter where in the world they are.
Besides Remote Control Software, there are plenty of other tools that have contributed to the increased popularity of telecommuting all over the world. Various other applications have helped too, such as video conference tools, email, virtual fax solutions and IP telephony have made the entire world your office. In fact, even if they do not implement the use of remote access software, a majority of businesses around the world make use of other technologies that allow for remote retrieval and exchange of information, thus making work from a remote location a possibility.
We also see
changes in hardware making it easier to get work done out of the office. Laptop
computers have become a lot more affordable in recent years, thus making it
possible for a variety of corporations to issue them to their employees so that
they could be more productive while they are out of the office, such as while
visiting a client location, attending a conference in another city, or going on
a business trip. Mobile devices like smart phones and tablets also have a major
role to play in the overall increase of telecommuting. According to key
speakers at the Johannesburg seminar, it is the proliferation of mobile
communications and computing devices that has kick started the increase in
telecommuting in many countries, such as South Africa, the United Kingdom
