Web site structure and data have preservation during an upgrade of Windows SharePoint Services. During a SharePoint migration,Upgrade Windows SharePoint Services Articles the website structure and data remain intact. Windows SharePoint helps to make the following changes:

1.       Migrate SharePoint Services technology of Windows to the latest version

2.       Content migration to the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 database schema

3.       Updates the user rights, site groups, and cross-site groups to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 user permissions, permission levels, and SharePoint groups

4.       Upgrades the Web Part customizations, if there is a necessity

5.       Upgrades the site customizations that were done with a Web design program that is compatible with Windows SharePoint Services, such as the Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007, if there is a requirement

The upgrade of Windows SharePoint Services happens in two primary ways, which are the in-place migration and the gradual migration. The in-place migration is a process, which directly changes the previous database. A gradual SharePoint Upgrade or migration, also known as the side by side migration, makes an assumption that the two versions run at the same time. There are two special databases available for the two versions. In addition, there is an up gradation of data in manageable portions during the breakdown of windows.

The In-Place Upgrade:

The in-place upgrade replaces the earlier code in a Web application with a code of the latest version and influences the database that had a used with the previous script. The SharePoint import process is monolithic which means that until the upgrade is complete for the database, the SharePoint sites will not be available.

An in-place upgrade performs a set of applicable actions on service instances and resources of the previous version. This provides a one-way transformation to the current version.

Its usage is primarily for single-system or small-volume installations. It gets a recommendation when there are no custom Web Parts added to the server field and where all the content is upgradeable over a period of days.

The Gradual Upgrade:

SharePoint 2007 migration done in a gradual migration/upgrade process, the operator upgrades a number of site collections at a time to the new database and the application version. The gradual upgrade process has a design to minimize the downtime. It relies on running the two versions side by side and defining a self-contained upgradeable subset of data. In a gradual upgrade, there is preservation of the data of the previous version and it is possible to revert to the pre-upgrade application and data.
