If you are a PC user who loves to stay ahead of the competition among PC users, to own the latest gadgetry, then you probably already own one of these little gadgets. These drives can store huge amount of digital data in a small space, provide lightning fast data transfer speeds, and are small enough to be carried around in a purse or on a keychain. Besides, these drives are quite sturdy, keeping your data safe from corruptions caused by recurring physical impacts. To top it all, these drives are also very simple to use; simply plug it in and the operating system will usually recognize it directly, without requiring a reboot of the PC.

The data capacities of USB flash drives vary greatly with the price. There are simple 1 GB thumb drives that come dirt-cheap, and there are 256 GB monsters that can cost the better part of a small fortune. However, flash drives do provide you with an invaluable object, namely, peace of mind. Most flash drives come with around 4-5 year warranties, and provide unmatched security to the data you store.

USB flash drives consist of printed circuit boards set inside a hard shell. The circuit boards store the data, while the external shell provides protection from dust, moisture and physical impacts. The only part that is exposed in a flash drive is the USB connector, which is used to plug it into a USB port.

The shell of a USB flash drive can be made of high-density plastic, metal, wood, or in some cases, rubber. The rubber shells will attract dirt and dust, and will lose the attractive appearance very soon. However, these drives are the most resistant to physical shock among all flash drives. The metal-bodied drives, on the other hand, retain an attractive look for a much longer period. The metal body also acts as an excellent conductor of static electricity, and prevents the stored data from getting corrupted by static electricity discharges. Wooden flash drives look stylish and last for a long time. However, these drives need to be protected from moisture.

Data security is quite high in a USB flash drive. Most of these drives support password authentication of stored data, and prevent anyone who does not know the password from accessing the data. Some drives require specialized software in order to support password protection, while others may support it natively. The data can also be retrieved at will and transferred at a very high speed, thus making flash drives quite good investments.
