With each e-mail you receive or send in MS Outlook, its data file called PST keeps on expanding. A huge PST not only makes Outlook slow, but also makes the PST file susceptible to corruption. PST file corruption is more likely when it is an ANSI PST, that is used in MS Outlook 2002 and earlier versions. Consider, an Outlook user suddenly encounters a bloated PST because of an unexpected event. He had a custom contact folder with few contact sub-folders. Further, he/she had installed a custom contact form and configured it as default for the rest of the contact folders. When he/she tried to add contacts to the contact folders programmatically, the PST file size grew dramatically to a great extent.
The above behavior might result if the size of contacts is too large or there are problems in the code that is copying those contacts to the contact folder of Outlook PST.
Solution
To reduce the overall size of a bloated Outlook PST, you should adopt one of the following measures:
(1) Open Outlook PST and check e-mails, contacts, etc. that you find unnecessary and can be deleted. Move those items to Deleted Items folder and empty the folder. Since Outlook PST is a database, deleting the items will have minor effect on the file size. So, you need to compact the file after deleting the items.
(2) Create a new PST and move some of your items to this new PST. The process is termed as PST archiving and is effective when the PST size is not too large.
(3) Use a Split PST Software and divide your large PST file into several smaller files. Split PST utilities are safe to use with their read-only algorithms and can work for any size of Outlook PST.
