Microsoft has a new alternative”Hybrid Sleep” to reduce power consumption in Windows 8. Hybrid sleep utilizes the qualities of both and thus offers a better option for user to minimize the power.

Windows 8 is the latest operating system developed by Microsoft and is launched few months ago. Microsoft has revamped the whole interface to interact with user. Now Microsoft has done a lot of research work to reduce the power consumption. In the previous version of Windows operating system includes Sleep and Hibernate option for minimizing the power consumption. Sleep is a state of computer in which computer saves current data & program settings on the computer memory i.e. RAM and switch your computer to the minimum power consumption state. In Hibernation state computer saves your docs, running application with their current status on the hard drive and allows you to switch off computer.

A new alternative “Hybrid Sleep” is introduced by Microsoft in Windows 8 to reduce power consumption. Hybrid sleep utilizes the qualities of both and thus offers a better option for user to minimize the power. When a user switches to Hybrid sleep computer saves all program and running applications with their current status on computer’s hard drive as well as on computer memory. It does not shut down your computer and puts your computer to minimum power consumption state. In case power failure you will not loose your work and your computer will retrieve all your data from computer’s hard drive.

It is very easy to configure your Windows 8 computer in Hybrid Sleep state by following the steps mentioned as:

Method 1:

·         Switch on your computer and when you are on the Start screen then move your cursor to top right corner of screen to open charms Bar.

·         Now click on the Search option and type “Power” in the text box available in the search box and press enter key to search then your computer will automatically search for the text and show the results.

·         A new window will appears on your screen, click on the “Settings” option on the right panel of results obtained and then click on “Change what the power buttons do” link available in the search results. 

·         It will enlist the Power options available in Windows 8, you have to select “Choose what the Power buttons do” available on the left panel of window.

·         A new window appears on your screen in which enlist all the Power options available in Windows 8, scroll down the screen and enable “Turn on the Fast startup (recommended)” option from the list.

·         Restart your computer to make changes to take affect and reboot your system to fix Windows 8 shutdown problem.

Method 2: For using this method you must possess Admin authority or have admin password.

·         Open Command prompt (cmd) window and type the following commands

powercfg /? (It displays info about the power option available in computer)

Powercfg-q (This command displays all information regarding the specification of current power scheme)

Powercfg-h on (It is used to switch your computer to Hybrid sleep state)

You can also set hibernate state time period by the following command:

Powercfg-x

Hibernate timeout ( ) minute   (in braces specify the time duration in minutes)
