Warehouse Management System is often offered as external application, which could be integrated with your Corporate ERP or Accounting system. This approach, if taken, may lead to paying for duplicate functionality in WMS, as you may already have pretty robust Inventory Management, Purchase Order Processing and Sales Order Fulfillment in your core ERP set of modules.

Plus,WMS Extension For Microsoft Dynamics GP Highlights Articles as additional overhead you might be involved into WMS integration implementation, as integration itself might be reasonably complex with multiple options and possible custom tuning.  In this small publication we are recommending the approach, when WMS extension works directly with Great Plains (new name is Microsoft Dynamics GP) database and integration is automatic and in real time (or optionally in barcode scanner batch upload mode):
1. Purchase Receipts.  Barcode extension for Dynamics GP in purchasing typically works in POP Purchase Receipt, where Receipt is created automatically by Barcode scanner data upload: Scanner display offers you the menu to pick Purchase Order, Inventory Item Number, QTY and if required - enter/scan Lot Number.  Purchase Receipt is created directly in GP database and could be opened in Great Plains user interface as if it would be created by GP user manually
2. Sales Order Allocation or Picking and Packing.  Warehouse worker with Barcode scanner reads Sales Order label, then he or she picks Items (or if item label is scanned by scanner, the Item line is highlighted on the scanner display), if lot number is required for the item, it is either selected from the list or scanned by the scanner.  This picking process allocates Sales Order Line (for picking and packing you set up SOP Order type with manual allocation).  Lines is allocated in real time directly in SOP Transaction Line table (SOP10200)
3. Inventory Cycle Count.  It is also available as Barcode scanner routine, where inventory count transaction are mapped to inventory transaction tables in real time
4. WMS in eCommerce example.  Let’s assume that your B2B ecommerce customers  orders merchandise online via ecommerce website.  If you use Alba Spectrum ecommerce application Sales Order could be created automatically as the image of ecommerce shopping cart.  Then you print Sales Order barcode picking ticket and send it to Warehouse for picking, packing and shipping.  Warehouse worker scans Sales order number, then scans picked items labels – these items are allocated to the Order and checked out from GP inventory site.  Order is ready for shipping
5. Routing logic.  System also has advanced logic for truck loading and merchandize delivering in consignment scenarios with minimization of the delivery time and route as well as preferred delivery dates for specific customer
6. Barcode scanner user interface simplicity.  WMS interface is very intuitive and you do one step in the time, where business logic walks you through the process.  Warehouse Management extension doesn’t require complex scanning training and warehouse worker could be ready to do scanning routines virtually in minutes after system demonstration
