Passing driving test is an important step toward throwing away your L plates. It is necessary to pass driving theory test before applying for practical test. Passing a DSA theory test is an important step for any new bike and car learner or driver. If you are thinking of appearing for the DSA theory test after 1st Jan 2012, you should make yourself aware of the new changes.

The Driving Standards Agency i.e. DSA is about to stop publishing the multiple choice questions and answers used in the driving theory test. From January 2012 it will create a new test using unpublished questions. Road Safety Minister Mike Penning has recently announced this. This is to ensure new drivers learn the principles behind driving theory instead of just memorizing the answers to pre-set questions.

The idea is that driving test candidates need to learn and understand the theory and gain the appropriate knowledge required to be a safe driver on the road and withdrawing access to the questions and answers bank will stop people from just remembering the questions and answers just to pass the theory test which is very common.

Henceforth no book, website, software product would contain real live exam questions. In fact no one would have access to these questions! But revision material will be published instead of the real questions. Knowledge and understanding for each question will be published along with the questions and answers.

These changes relate only to multiple choice section of the test.

1 case study will still be part of the test, as it was before.

Also, there will be no changes in hazard perception test part of the DSA test. This part of the theory test requires you to view 14 hazard video clips on the computer screen of approximately one minute each; score will be calculated on how good you are in judging the potential hazards on the road while driving.

The Highway Code is essential reading for everyone. This is very useful to know road/traffic signs, rule and regulations if you are preparing for your driving theory test or practical test.

To pass your DSA test you need to
  • Practice and understand all questions from the DSA official source material
  • Solve as many random mock test as you can
  • Read and understand The Highway Code rules
  • Practice as many interactive hazard clips as you can.
