People are now buying books online in record numbers. But why do so many people prefer to shop online instead of visiting their local book sellers?

As we have seen with the closing of the Borders book store,What Drives the Online Sales of Books? Articles brick and mortar book stores are having quite a hard time competing with their online counterparts.Do you wonder why that is? There are many factors behind this. Here are some of them.Lower overheads Maintaining a physical location or several dozen physical locations from which to sell books costs a lot of money. They will need to pay for a lot more staff, as well as all other costs associated with maintaining a physical store. These costs are dramatically reduced when running an online business.Online book sellers only need a warehouse from where they ship their products, as well as an office for their staff.Obviously, the costs are far less than operating a chain of book stores with dozens of outlets.Increased product selection Lets take the example of people who like to read Romance Novels. Many would go to their local book store to see if they have the book that they wanted. However, in a lot of cases, they leave disappointed after finding out that the book that they wanted to buy is out of stock or is simply not available at that book store.Unless they really need the book right away, few people will embark on a wild goose chase all around town trying to find a book store that has the book that they want to get.So what do they do instead? They simply buy their Romance Books Online. If they had a positive experience with the e-commerce site they used (low prices, fast shipping, good service, etc.) then they are more likely to simply skip the book store next time and go looking for the book on the internet instead. This means more profits for online sellers and less money for brick and mortar stores.Availability of digital media While some might argue that people read less, this is not entirely true.If someone is reading an article posted on a blog, for example, they are still reading. It is just that the medium that they use for reading is different.Instead of reading what they want on paper, they do so on their computer. This is why eBooks are so popular. Many genres of electronic books, such as Erotic eBooks, science fiction eBooks or business eBooks are either sold or given away freely on the internet. If the type of reading material that they want is available in electronic format, many people will prefer to get it this way, as opposed to a print version. There is a lot less effort involved in downloading an eBookFind Article, as opposed to having to get up and go to a book store to buy a paper copy of a book.
