Tips To Care For Your Rug

When you own valuables, you take care of them. An Oriental or Persian rug is very valuable and with proper care can be expected to last for many years and even passed on to family members as heirlooms. If you take care of your rug, it will look better and last longer in the home. The following simple ideas can help you to get the maximum wear and life out of your rug.

Rugs should be rotated occasionally so that they wear evenly. Most people find that rotating their rugs at least once a year is necessary to keep the wear caused by foot traffic even and balanced.

Rugs should not be exposed to bright sunlight. You should have curtains or blinds over windows. Sunlight will cause the bright colors used in these rugs to fade and lose their vibrancy.

Be sure that you vacuum your rug on a regular basis. Vacuum before the rug appears to be dirty. If your rug has fringe, be careful that your vacuum does not catch the fringe in the beater bar.

Any time there is a spill on the rug, act quickly and you can prevent stains from becoming set. Scoop everything possible up from the spill. Then use clean dry towels or paper towels to soak up and absorb as much liquid as possible. Take a clean towel and fold in quarters. Place the towel over the spill and step on it with as much weight as possible. This will draw even more of the spill out of the rug.

If the stain remains, use warm water applied to the stain to dilute it and blot dry again. If necessary, add a small amount of laundry detergent to the water. Continue applying the water and blotting until the stain is gone. If you used laundry detergent, use one final application of clean water to rinse. Dry gently using the low setting on a hair drier or a wet dry vacuum.

For solid stains such as wax or chewing gum, use a spoon to remove as much of the stain as possible, then use the warm water and detergent to removing any excess stain. If necessary, you may need to use a dry cleaning solvent to remove the final traces of the stain.

Wine stains should be treated with talcum powder and then use the detergent and water to remove any stain.

If your rug needs a more thorough cleaning, contact a professional rug cleaning company. They have the correct equipment to clean the rug and return it to you looking and smelling great.

If your rug becomes damaged, the cleaning company may also have the needed tools to make repairs to your rug. Damage will become worse unless it is repaired immediately.

For insurance purposesFeature Articles, you should have photographs of your rugs stored in a safe location. This can help the police to recover your rug in case of theft and the photo along with information including size and country of origin can help the adjuster to settle your claim.
