While Cesar Alvarez’s paintings depict many kinds of subjects,Cesar Alvarez: Building a World from Colors Articles from intimate portraits to sweeping cityscapes, the uniting force behind his images is their distinctive use of color. “My paintings are identified by my color palette,” he says, and his palette is based predominantly on warm tones—reds, oranges and yellows that give his works a vibrant, engaging presence. The warmth and softness of his colors is then balanced with a sharp eye for detail, texture and composition, resulting in pictures that are at once realistic and impressionistic. Precisely rendered figures will be placed against patterns of pure color, or clouds of light will animate and give depth to a scene. The resulting images have an energizing mix of textures and moods.

Working in oils on canvas, Alvarez takes advantage of the durability and suppleness of oils, which give him the freedom to experiment.  That air of experimentation provides his work with its sense of play and spontaneity, embodying the artist’s adventurous spirit and bringing each painting’s subject vividly to life. Born in Colombia, Alvarez now lives and works in Connecticut.

About the Exhibition

Sensorial Perspectives: Experience of the Body

This December Agora Gallery presents Sensorial Perspectives, an exciting new collective exhibition that works to immerse the viewer, one physical sensation at a time. Five painters, two mixed-media artists, and one photographer offer work that challenge the traditional understanding of art as a purely visual medium. No fewer than four abstract artists are featured; they share a skillful use of bold colors and large-scale shapes but each differs in the emotional appeal to viewers. These painters show us the different ways color can shoot straight past the eyes to raise hairs on the skin and cause tingles beneath it. The exhibition's representational works also aim to make the viewer experience rather than look. One artist puts realistic figures against backgrounds of bubbling, exquisite clouds of reds and blues that communicate speed and movement. Another offers sharply contrasted, multicolor portraits that convey the presence of another person. The exhibition's photography show us the world from a human's eye point of view, with no more context and no more clarity than a person walking through would possess.
