There are numerous sites and step-by-step tutorial videos available for building and designing a wedding website, but many of them don’t provide all of the information you need to make your site function properly. If your wedding website doesn’t provide all of the information that your guests need in an easy to navigate and understand way, it actually defeats the purpose of your wedding website.
There are few things to keep in mind to make sure your site is perfect, beyond the actual amount of time it takes to create a personalized wedding website that is a true reflection of you and your soon-to-be’s love for one another. Simple and to the Point While you may be tempted to include every tidbit of information about your engagement and relationship when designing a wedding website, you really need to condense all that information down into an easy to read format. According to recent studies, most people only read around 50% of everything they click on when surfing the web. Even though your wedding is super important to you, it does not mean that all your visitors will want to read pages and pages of stories, anecdotes, etc. Pull out the most important information, and make sure that you don’t provide more than a paragraph or two to make sure everyone reads your details. Navigation Needs to be Simple When you are designing a wedding website, make sure you are keeping all required navigation easy to follow and understand. There may be family members or friends who are not familiar with using the internet or a computer, but they still want to see your site. Try to incorporate navigational buttons that are obvious and easy to see – this may mean you will have to take the time to figure out how to resize or add buttons. Keep it Appropriate The internet allows for greater exposure than ever before, which means you never know who might be visiting your website. Keep the photos you use appropriate for all ages – you don’t want your kids or grandparents to see something they shouldn’t! If you don’t have any appropriate photos, you will need to search for images or examples that you can use, which can take hours to find the perfect one. Keep a Running Theme If you have sent out stationery or save the date information, you will want to make sure you stick to the same design elements designing a wedding website as well. This will help to add a sense of familiarity while designing your wedding website. As an added bonus, it will also make sure that everyone is aware of your theme before they ever arrive. If you haven’t sent anything out yet, you get to have the fun of finding or designing your perfect theme. Make sure you have plenty of time though; some of the wedding website designers have tons of templates and examples from which to choose. Ditch the Music While you may love the latest hip-hop or rap song, others may not. Adding music when designing your wedding website can make some visitors click away quickly – especially if they find the music to be offensive. If you want a visual element, check out some example videos to get a feel for adding them to your site. Designing a wedding website can be fun, but it is also very time consuming if you want to get it perfect. If you don’t have all that much time to devote to your site, you can always choose from the examples provided, but you will still need to spend time editing the text, photos, and even the layout so that everything fits properly.
