In James Chisholm’s paintings,James Chisholm: Capturing nature in the process of transformation Articles the dense networks of colors, shapes and lines found in nature are given a variety of interpretations. Working in oils and watercolors, Chisholm creates distinctive views of the natural world. His watercolors have a spontaneity and freedom that bring complex patterns of trees and water alive, turning each scene into a realistic depiction of forests and streams complimented with an almost abstract arrangement of light and color. Free brushstrokes and soft-edged areas of color result in pieces that mix energy and delicacy to strong effect. While his oil paintings have sharper details and a more traditionally realistic ambiance, they exhibit the same dynamic feel for line and composition.

Chisholm calls the act of painting a “dialogue” with the world, and that notion of a constantly evolving relationship between artist and subject results in works with an appealingly open-ended quality. That open-endedness extends to such recent strategies as not totally finishing a painting to its edges, further underlining the sense of transformation that makes his images so involving.

Chisholm is based in Salem, Massachusetts and regularly exhibits as well as teaches all around the Boston area.

About the Exhibition

Enigmatic Visions

Enigmatic Visions is a new group exhibition from Agora Gallery highlighting a range of exceptionally thoughtful work from eleven contemporary artists. In watercolor, photography, oil, ink, and acrylic, the participants find exciting new ways to create focus. One painter reduces the seascape to a single color, using a palette that is at once strict and infinitely flexible in its endless shades of blue. Another draws all the textural possibilities out of just one kind of brushstroke. A third uses abstraction to surround and isolate his subjects. Enigmatic Visions uses the traditional themes of domesticity, nature, and formal beauty to dive deeper into the details of everyday life.
