Nature in all its forms is the inspiration for Leilani’s paintings. From a close-up look at a snow leopard’s eyes to sweeping views of mountainous landscapes,Leilani: A Positive Vision of Nature Articles her images bring the natural world to life in sharp detail, making an immediate connection with the viewer. “My style is to idealize and to simplify,” she says, “using bright colors and a bold approach.” The deceptive simplicity of her images can be seen in her use of basic lines and shapes, capturing the arc of an ocean wave or the stripes across a zebra’s body with a strong clarity. Having worked as a graphic designer, Leilani has transformed the skills of that craft into an expressive technique that finds the essence of each subject.

Leilani’s approach to color is also a major contributor to the effect of her paintings. Adept at balancing complementary tones to create a sense of depth and space, she also uses contrast between light and dark to give her paintings a feeling of movement and drama. The resulting images reflect what Leilani calls “the positive and the beauty in the world.”

About the Exhibition

Landscapes of the Mind: A New World

Landscapes of the Mind, the new collective exhibition at Agora Gallery, highlights a select group of artists who have succeeded in presenting the natural beauty of the earth in a unique way. These six artists come from an astonishing geographic range - from Australia to Puerto Rico to Germany - and between them represent the earth, sea, and sky. There are dazzlingly detailed oil paintings of water flowing that completely engulf the viewer in the moment. There are birds in flight rendered as impressionistic dabs, simply color and movement and nothing else. There are images captured by camera that reach beyond travel photography to find precious, specific, hold-your-breath moments when the sun is at its most thrilling. You will also find nature as told by its animals: close-up paintings of bears, zebras, and lions, as thoughtful and probing as any human's portrait. This exhibition proves that there will always be something new to say about the wonders of the planet, as long as there are artists that pay attention.
